Research

Silviculture, tree improvement programs, and environmental issues, are the primary areas of Rayonier's forestry-related research. Our scientists strive to improve long-term financial returns by identifying and implementing management techniques that increase timber production per acre, or reduce growing costs. Often working in conjunction with university-based research cooperatives, other timber companies or environmental groups, our research team emphasizes using applied research that quickly transfers to the use of new technology in our operations.

In its earlier days, Rayonier scientists teamed with DuPont® to perfect the world's first pulp from hemlock trees. Its first uses: rayon (viscose) fabric and nitrocellulose for use in smokeless gunpowder during World War II.
