Sustainable Forestry

Rayonier timberland is managed using environmentally responsible forestry practices to ensure sustainability and protect water and wildlife. All of our U.S. forests are certified as meeting the standards of the internationally-recognized Sustainable Forest Initiative (SFI) program, through third party audits conducted every 12 to 18 months by Bureau Veritas Quality International.

Our Washington lands are managed under the federally and state approved Forests & Fish Habitat Conservation Plan designed to provide abundant fish habitat, and cool, clean water throughout the state.

In New Zealand, as manager for Matariki Forests, we hold ISO 14001 certification for our environmental management systems. In addition, our Southern North Island and Southland/Otago forests, which represent 25 percent of the managed estate, have been certified as meeting the Forest Stewardship Council's (FSC) principles and criteria for well-managed forests. These forests are audited annually by SGS, a global leader in the inspection, verification, testing and certification of quality standards.

As a member of the New Zealand Forest Owners Association, Rayonier is also a signatory to both the New Zealand Forest and New Zealand Climate Change Accords. These are agreements among environmentalists, government, and industry, that focus on the stewardship of plantation forests and the environmental services they provide.

In 2007, Rayonier partnered with the State of New York and the Trust for Public Land on an agreement that permanently protected almost 51,000 acres of working forests the company owns within the Adirondack Park.
